Welcome to the Heron House

This is a chronicle of the building of the Heron House, a residence in Asheville, NC, that draws inspiration from the Great Blue Heron and uses some strategies to minimize impact on a steep slope, including a steel pier foundation and roadside parking.

Some content regards personal inspirations; this house will eventually be a home for me and those inspirations.

Thanks to all friends, family and professionals who have been and will be a part of creating a home in this special place. Welcome. - Gina

Site plan and Elevations

Here are the site plan and the SW and SE elevations. The house is sited to follow the contours, fall within the 25' setback in the deed restrictions, capture long range SW views, and provide some distance from the water tank across the street at the SE corner. The parking area follows the contours and is just off the road with a small amount of fill behind some areas of wall that never exceed 4' and the house sits on 10 steel piers, so no cut and fill is needed for the house.

I'm conserving many trees because I like them, they shield the house from summer afternoon sun, and it helps preserve the beauty of the mountain, especially when viewed from town. The ring drawn around one large Oak indicates an area in which to be careful during construction in order to help preserve the root system.
